It's the world's quietest revolution, basically. The younger generations are literally impatient for their turn to change their societal structure and their social order is disintegrating because of it. Many people in that same age bracket are also dissatisfied with the notion of the traditional family structure and all of the side effects to it, such as homophobia, discrimination against women who won't have children and the reluctance of the salaryman lifestyle devolving young people into NEETs.Īnd it's the 50+ generations that are holding everything else back. There are still misconceptions that you have to 'deprogram' from most people, but once that's over, you can usually just go on being normal with the good majority of people. They just aren't prepared for someone being so upfront about it. More often than not, if you tell a Japanese person that's younger than 40 that you're gay, their first reaction would be just shock that you were so upfront and honest with them about it, as there's an expectation that you can be whatever you want in private, but that's where it stays. It just goes to show that the aged population of Japan still has a stranglehold on it, because even the eldest Millennial is typically pretty cool about it.
